Chapter 45:

Ike decided to walk to the coffee machine in the hall while Kat was still asleep. Taylor and Zac were sleeping in the waiting room.

Tay had been trying to find a comfortable spot on the waiting room chair when he noticed Ike walk pass the room.

"Hey" Taylor said as he put his hand on his brothers shoulder. "How are you holding up?" he asked.

"It's hard, very hard to see her like this Tay." Ike explained.

"Mom said the cabin is ready for Christmas, all we have to do is get the doctor's permission." Tay told Ike.

"Yeah I know, Mrs. Martin was in early and told me. They are waiting for Dr. Alexander to speak to them tomorrow." Ike said as he reached for the hot coffee he was drinking.

Taylor sat down next to his brother and they talked about how this Christmas would be there last with Kat.

Early the next morning Dr. Alexander arrived at the hospital. "I apologize for not being here sooner," she said as she picked up the chart of information on Kat.

Jack and Sarah sat waiting for her to tell them everything would be all right.

"I'd like to take her chart and talk to a colleague of mine" Dr. Alexander said as she looked through the papers.

"That would be fine" Jack answered as the doctor left the room.

Kat had been in and out of her sleepy state ever since being brought in to the hospital a week ago.

"Kat honey, can you hear us?" Sarah asked softly touching her face.

Kat opened her eyes and smiled. She tried to speak, but her voice was soft and Sarah could not make out what she was trying to say.

"Oh baby, I am so sorry." Sarah cried.

Diana and Walker entered Kat's room quietly and sat down. "Sarah is there anything I can do?" Diana offered.

"Diana I do not believe there is anything anyone of us can do now." She said as she sat next to her daughter.

Tay, Zac and Ike were on their way to their grandparents cabin in the mountains.

"Man it sure is cold up here" Zac said rubbing his hands together.

"Not much further Zac." Ike reassured his brother.

"I can't wait to start up the fireplace." Tay chimed in.

Ike reminded his brother, "Well Tay the only way we can start a fire is to gather the up the wood first."

"Opps I forgot about that part. Well that's ok we can get it ready in no time flat." Tay answered.

"Yeah, if we don't freeze first" Zac joked trying to lighten things up a bit.

The three brothers arrived shortly after 6 p.m. to the cabin and began gathering wood for the fire.

"I'll start the fire, why don't you call the hospital and let them know we made it and check on Kat" Tay shouted from the rec. room.

"Good thinking Tay, I will do that then help Zac with the rooms." Ike replied.

"Help me? Come on I'm a big boy now I think I can make a few beds guys." Zac shouted from the linen closet.

Ike laughed at Zac's remark as he dialed Kat's hospital room.

Chapter 46:

Dr. Alexander returned to the hospital room where the Martin's and Hanson's were talking.

"I don't mean to interrupt you" she said as she sat down next to the family.

"Did you find out anything new?" Sarah asked.

"Would you like to go somewhere else to discuss this " the doctor asked as she looked towards Kat.

"You go ahead we'll sit with her" Diana reassured her.

"Thank you, Diana." Jack said as they exited the room.

The doctor lead the Martin's to a small conference room down the hall.

"Please have a seat Mr. And Mrs. Martin" offered Dr. Alexander.

"I spoke with Dr. Rao, he is a neurological specialist. The cancer has spread into a larger area than what we originally thought. The treatments Kat have undergone do not seem to be helping." She explained.

"If the treatments are not working that what are her chances in recovering from this?" Jack asked.

"Well with the area that the cancer is located in, and the lack of response from the treatments the odds are not looking in our favor." The doctor replied.

Sarah looked at the doctor through tears and asked, "How long do we have with her?"

"Sarah I'm not go to lie or give you false hopes, in my professional opinion I think we are looking at 4-6 weeks." She answered.

"4-6 weeks oh my god, is that all." Sarah sobbed. "We want to take her to the Hanson's cabin in the mountains, can we do that?" Sarah asked.

"Sarah I don't know if that would be a good idea, with a change in temperature and being in the mountains the pressure is not good for her in her condition." Dr. Alexander replied.

"We made a promise to her and come hell or high water we are keeping that promise." Sarah said.

"Mrs. Martin, I just want you to know in my professional opinion I don't think this be in her best interest." Dr. Alexander said.

"Your opinion means a lot to our family Dr. Alexander, but we just have to keep this promise. Can't you see this is going to be our last Christmas with her." Sarah wept.

"I understand Sarah, I just wanted to give you the risk your facing." Dr. Alexander explained.

"Is there anyway we can make this work?" Jack asked.

Standing up Dr. Alexander told Sarah and Jack she would check into a few things and get back to them.
