Sarah and Jack made sure Kat was comfortable in her room when they returned from the hospital.
“I have to go get some prescriptions filled and I will be back after that, can I get you anything” Jack asked his daughter.
“Yeah how bout a box of Rogain for my hair” Kat said with a half smile.
Jack gave his daughter a sempathic look as he left her room.
Kat was really tried so she decided to take a nap.
Sarah needed to talk to someone so she called Diana while Kat slept.
“Do you want me to get that” Zac said to his dad as he and Tay entered the study.
“No, I will get it” Diana leaned over and picked up the ringing phone.
“Hello” covering the phone “Will you please excuse me I think I will take this up stairs” she said hanging up the phone.
“We'll wait until you return before we get started” Walker said reading his wife’s face that this call was extremely important
Tay and Zac sat there stunned by their parents behavior.
Taylor spoke up “Does this have anything to do with the band?”
“No it has to do with Kat” Walker said looking down at the carpet.
Taylor felt like someone had kicked him in the gut. He thought that Kat was going to be alright but this seemed to be really bad news.
Ike sat in one of the chairs in the music room. His tears were slowly rolling down his cheeks as he thought about Kat. “She is my best friend” he softly whispered aloud.
The door to the music room opened and Diana stood in the doorway.
It hurt her to see so much pain. “Mrs. Martin just phoned me” she said sitting on the arm of the chair Ike was sitting in.
“It doesn’t look good, Kat has what is called a Medulloblastomas tumor. She will have to go through radiation therapy for 6 weeks.”
“Is she going to die?” Ike looked at his mother.
“The doctor can not say for sure if this is terminal” Diana grabbed his hand.
“Ike, the Martin’s haven’t told Kat yet”
“You mean she doesn’t know?” Ike yelled.
“They wanted her to be at home when they told her, not in the hospital” she told him.
“I want to be there” Ike stood up and went up stairs to call Mrs. Martin.
Jack had just returned from the store “I will get that” picking up the ringing phone.
“Hello, Ike yes, I know, thank you, let me talk to Sarah about it and we will call you before we do anything ok.” Jack talked it over with Sarah and they both knew that Ike being here with Kat was the only thing to get her through this.
Chapter 36:
Tay and Zac waited for Diana to enter the study.
“That call was from Mrs. Martin” she informed them. “Today at the hospital they found out some really bad news about Kat’s condition, she has a Medulloblastomas tumor she will be starting radiation therapy and that will last 6 weeks” Diana felt Zac’s hand on her shoulder.
“Is she dying?” Tay asked.
“The doctor really does not know the outcome”
“All we can do is pray for the best” Walker spoke up.
“How is Kat?” Zac asked
“Kat does not know just yet, her parents wanted to wait until she was home before they told her” Diana said.
Tay and Zac looked at each other “Does Ike know?” they both said at the same time.
“Yes Ike knows, I told him” Diana explained to them.
“He must be in bad shape” Taylor said.
“He went to call the Martin’s to see if he could be there when they told Kat” Diana told them.
Jack, Sarah and Ike had talked about how to break the news to Kat, “This will be the hardest thing I have and will ever have to do” Sarah cried.
“Kat needs to know” Jack said holding her.
“I am going to go up and sit with her until she wakes up” Ike told them.
Ike had been over at the Martin house for a half hour sitting next to Kat watching her sleep.
“Kat I love you” Ike whispered.
Kat started to wake up.
Seeing Ike in her room she gave a smile. “Hey there” she said still groggy from her nap.
“How are you feeling” Ike asked.
“Well my head hurts alittle” Kat said as she tried to sit up.
“Hang on let me go get you mom” Ike hurried out of the room.
Returning with some pills Ike watched as she took them.
Sarah and Jack had followed Ike into Kat’s room. “Honey we need to talk to you” Sarah started.
“It’s bad news huh?” Kat looked at everyone.
“Yes it is” Jack sat down on her bed.
Ike had moved to sit next to Kat on her bed.
“We wanted to tell you this after you left the hospital, the doctor told us the tumor they removed was what they call Medulloblastoma, they want you to start radiation therapy in the next week or two.” Sarah was trying to be strong as she told Kat.
“Do they know if that will cure me?” Kat said through the sobs.
Ike hugged his best friend and began to cry.
