Chapter 1:
The rain was coming down harder now. Standing by the window, Kat looks into the night. The tears seem to flow down her cheeks just as easily as did the raindrops against the darkness. Looking toward the nightstand next to her bed, she stares at the phone.
"I know it's late, maybe...no I can't" Kat says to herself.
Kat picked up the phone and began dialing the number. She had dialed it tens times tonight, but could not bring herself to complete the call. All she had to do is push that last number.
Across town Ike was working in the music room of the Hanson home. Taylor had just called it quits for the night, and told Ike he was going up stairs to and get some sleep.
"Nite, see ya in a few," Ike yelled to Taylor as he reached the top of the stairs.
Just as Tay was crossing the kitchen floor, the phone rang, scaring the beegeebees out of him.
"Hello, Hanson residence," Taylor said in a tired business like voice.
"Hey Tay, it's Kat" a voice said,"God Kat, you sound terrible! Everything ok?" Tay asked sweetly.
"Uh, is Ike there?" Kat asked in an urgent manner.
"Sure, just a sec. He's down in the music room. Ike, phone!" Tay screamed down the stairs.
Ike picked up the phone,"Ike, speaking,"
"Hey there," he heard a familiar yet distressed voice on the other end.
"Kat what's wrong?" Ike asked.
"Am I bothering you, I know it's late...I just...I just need a friend" Kat said almost in tears.
"Say no more" Ike said, "I am never to busy for my friend. I'm on my way." he assures her.
Ike ran up the stairs and grabbed the car keys off the key rack.
"Tay, are you still up?" Ike peeks in his room.
"Yup, I am afraid so. I forgot I have a paper due tomorrow, and Mom will surely shoot me if I don't have it done" he said exausted.
"Tay, I have to go over to Kat's house. Something's up." Ike explains.
"Yeah, it sounded like she had been crying" Tay said sympathetically.
"Ok if anyone asks where I am, can you tell them?" asks Ike.
"Sure, see you later. Be careful driving in this rain storm," Tay says showing a brotherly concern.
Chapter 2:
Kat was sitting in the middle of her room when she heard footsteps coming towards her room.
"Your dad let me in," Ike said as he opened the door. Ike knew something major was up because he had never seen his friend this way.
"Kat come here," Ike pulled her into his arms, and held her while she cried for what seemed like hours. Ike had known Kat for many years. They were best friends. Their dads worked together, and some times their families traveled together.
Ike could never have been prepared for what his friend about to tell him.
"Kat, please tell me what's wrong," Ike quietly asked.
"Ike, I don't know what to do..I don't want to die!" Kat just started yelling.
Ike felt all the blood in his face drain out..."Die?" Ike said to himself. "What..what do you mean?" Ike said shaking. Ike knew she had a cold the past few weeks but everyone gets a cold this time of year.
"Well, the doctors said it might be tumor." Kat sobbed.
"I thought all you had was a cold!" Ike said in shock.
"So did I, but I also had these headaches and some dizziness, my mom made an appointment to take me to the doctors last week. They ran some tests and sent me home." Kat went on, "My mom got the call this morning, and they wanted me to come back in for a follow up. We got to the doctors office, and they said they had to do more tests, and sent us over to St. Johns Medical Center. We were there all day. Ike, I am so scared."
Ike held her tight in his arms as the tears filled his eyes.
It was midnight by now. Kat had fallen asleep, but Ike didn't want to let her go, so he just sat there holding her. Kat's mom knocked on the door to tell Ike he should be going home before his mom sends the police out looking for him.
"Thank you Ike, Kat needed to be with you tonight." Sarah said walking Ike to the door.
